How to Play JJ – Pocket Jacks – In No Limit Holdem

I can remember a time in the past when I used to get JJ in a no limit holdem ring game and cringe, knowing that it would be super difficult to play at best. I’d read books and articles by Doyle Brunson, Phil Gordon, and others who had confidently played JJ, only to lose to someone who had luck on their side. To make matters worse, those times where I would lose to aces loaded to the proper 1500 chip stack were usually when I was playing at a limit, such as $2-$4.

First of all, what is JJ? It is a very powerful poker hand, one that can take down even the best of players. In fact, JJ is the best of all hands in no limit holdem, especially when playing unsuited. When playing suited JJ, you have approximately a 35% chance of winning the hand.

It seems to me that there are at least three reasons why playing JJ is difficult. First, you have to hit your set. Second, if you hit your set, there are going to be way too many suckouts in the game to make your decision based solely on probability. And third, you have a very limited chance of winning the hand in the first place.

The first reason why you have a difficult time playing Dewavegas is the fact that you simply do not have any information to help you make a decision. You have the guy in first position who is the surest to hit his set, and everyone after him knows that as well. So, unless you have a very good read on first position, it might be best to just fold your JJ hand pre-flop.

However, there are other ways to play JJ if you know what you are doing. One thing to remember is that your JJ hand is not invincible. In fact, if you make a bad read and a high card comes on the flop, you could be in big trouble.

For example, if you have JJ and the flop comes J-8-4, if you bet and someone re-raises you all in, you will probably not make this hand. In fact, you will probably lose because you cannot be honest with your hand and call the amount of money you have to invest.

If you have JJ and the flop comes A-J-10, if you bet and someone re-raises you all in, you again will probably lose because you cannot tell the difference between pocket Aces and Big Slick. In the above example, you would be willing to call a small bet in the above situation, but not many players will, and you need a read on your opponents to make the right decision.

The second reason your JJ is not invincible is the fact that other players make big mistakes because they have no idea what you have. They may be operating with the incorrect premise that you have A-A or K-K, when really your hand is very strong.

If you can, try to be more aggressive pre-flop with your JJ. By being more aggressive, you will give the impression to other players that you have a big hand pre-flop. A well-known example is when you have nothing in the early stages of the game but you call your pre-flop raise with nothing in your hand. Often, you will win the blinds and blinds will not hurt your chip stack that much.

You can also slow-play JJ if you have a big chip stack. Again, in position, you can tell other players have the same sort of hands as you. You can then take them to the wall and force them to make difficult decisions.

If you haveChelsiki VaAska or Alaska King, while playingortgage, you should bet Quietly. In the last few betting rounds, while the blinds are still low, if no one has raised the pot and everyone still looks to be playing tight, make a small bet and, again, only call calls.

The last thing to take into consideration is your own stack size and the blind levels. If you have $800 chips and the blinds are $0.50-1/2, you should play more aggressively, especially if you have top pair or better. With that amount of chips, you will not have to fold to a raise and you’ll likely win the blinds to help build your stack.

The other players at the table need to remember your expert poker judgment and play back at you with any worthy hands that they have, while applying your concepts to their own play. In other words, the best cards that the cards you’re holding. The other players need to play back at you with any cards that they have that are in a position to hit your back door.
